Consumers increasingly demand smarter and more connected homes. Antenna’s strong interest in smart home technology has led us to work closely with Parks Associates, whose research and analysis of emerging consumer technologies provides a wealth of data on what’s next for the sector.

Antenna is an official supporter of CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference, on May 24-26 in San Francisco.

Recent consumer research by Parks Associates indicates a growing number of U.S. broadband households purchasing various security devices in the next 12 months. Nearly 20% of consumers report that they intend to acquire a networked security camera during that time frame, and a similar number plan to buy a smart door lock.

Further, 65% of U.S. broadband households with a security system already in place plan to buy a smart home device within the year. 360 View: Residential Security and Smart Home notes that smart home devices with security/safety benefits are growing more popular among consumers, and that broadband households with a home security system see the ability to protect one’s home while traveling as the top driver for their security purchases.

Remote access capability is also very influential for purchase motivation, and nearly 40% of home security households claim this ability as a key driver for their security ownership.

“Security households, rather than being content with their current system, have a proclivity to add more smart features to their home,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “Companies need to use this insight to capitalize on the growing demand for connected devices in the home.”

Companies have taken note and are offering customers a growing number of options. Parks Associates’ Security Dealer Survey: Emerging Trends in Security Systems Sales and Services revealed that 70% of U.S. security dealers currently install some type of interactive smart home device or system within their residential offerings, or plan to do so within the next 12 months. Nearly 75% of security dealers offer interactivity with their devices, which can be controlled through smartphones, tablets, and computers.

These demands translate to a potential increase in the number of installations possessing interactivity and smart home features. Nearly 40% of installs in 2015 had both system interactivity and enhanced smart home features, increasing from 31% in 2014.

Parks Associates will address the dynamics of the smart home and home security markets in multiple sessions at the 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference. The event will take place May 24-26 in San Francisco, CA. For more information, visit www.connectionsus.com.
